Ukrainians not fear terrorist attacks

The vast majority of Ukrainians (81.9%) are not afraid of possible terrorist attacks in public areas, according to an opinion poll conducted by the Kyiv Gorshenin Institute of Management Issues.

Some 73.5% of respondents answered “definitely not” to this question, 8.4% opted for “probably not.” A total of 16.8% of Ukrainians fear the possible terrorist attacks, including 9% saying “definitely yes,” and 7.8% “probably so”. Some 1.3% of the respondents found it difficult to answer this question.

The opinion poll, entitled “The Explosions in Makiivka” was held on January 24-26, 2011. A total of 1,000 respondents aged 18 or over were interviewed in all regional centers of Ukraine, Kyiv and Sevastopol. The poll’s margin of error does not exceed 3.2%.

The vast majority of Ukrainians (86.1%) have heard about the explosions in Makiivka. Some 13.3% of respondents had not heard about them, while 0.6% found it difficult to answer the question.

Almost a quarter of the citizens of Ukraine (22.3%) believe the explosions in Makiivka were terrorist attacks. However, only 8.6% of the residents of Makiivka believe in this.

A total of 17.5% of Ukrainians believe the explosions in Makiivka were an attempt to cover up economic crimes, while almost a third of respondents in Makiivka (30.8%) expressed this opinion. At the same time, 16.3% of Ukrainians consider Makiivka explosions an attempt to distract public attention from other problems in the country, 14.5% of citizens see them as a political scheme and 13.3% as a crime to extort money. The “other” option was chosen by 7.8% of Ukrainians, and 21.7% of respondents were undecided on this issue.

As reported, two explosions rocked the town of Makiivka in Donetsk region on January 20. The first blast took place outside the office building of the state owned coal enterprise Makiivvuhillia, while the second explosion happened near the Golden Plaza shopping mall. No one was killed or injured in the incidents.
