A short, swarthy man hits the dance floor at Arena, an upscale night club in the centre of Kyiv, on a summer night. He moves to the rhythm of the music and smiles encouragingly as he watches female hips gyrate a hand’s breadth away.
He spots a pair barely covered by low-rise jeans and moves into position behind the dancing girl. His hands reach out for her hips, and his excitement is now clearly visible. The man presses his body toward the dancer until the girl finally turns around and pushes him away.
But Ibraham, a 35-year-old Argentinean, isn’t complaining. During the first five days of his Kyiv trip, he’s already slept with three girls – quite an experience, he says.
“My friends back home told me girls here are beautiful and that you can have one for $50-100 per hour, which is good price for such beauties”, says Ibraham. He smells strongly of a sweet scent when he bends over to make himself heard above the deafening music.
“And I found it all true; there’s so many girls here that you could never have back home,” he grins, turning his eyes back to the dance floor.
Meanwhile, a bunch of middle-aged guys crowd the club’s two bars – Americans, Europeans, Turks, Asians, Some are sipping their drinks while scanning the crowd; the luckier ones are struggling to make themselves understood in pantomime conversations with long-legged Ukrainian blondes.
Arena’s art director Vitaliy Lytvynenko says it’s all normal for a club like Arena, which is centrally located and has a lot of beautiful girls.

I was invited by a Ukrainian girl to visit her country.I had no intention of meeting other girls and was aware of the poverty and the escalating AIDS situation there. I’m from Austria and I’m actually half-Russian. I visited Ukraine in August of 2010. I’m not a sex tourist or something like that, I just wanted to visit the country, Kiew and I was interested in their customs. The people there are very polite, friendly and the cities are not dangerous at all. Austria is definitely more dangerous than Ukraine. This may sound a little bit crazy, but it’s true.
Ukraine girls have a special charm, and I do like them very much.
It’s true, that their spoken English is on a very low level, but as I speak Russian like a Russian I had no problems with communication.

Generalization is always bad and should be avoided, however it is known and one can clearly see that many many many ukrainian and russian women are behaving like cheap creatures…the way they dress, wear their make up etc. they have a touch of trashiness inside them. I am a woman myself and unfortunately feel awfully offended if people suspect me ukrainian. This is more of the lethany of self-deprecation by Ukrainians, that love to feel bad about themselves while being paradoxically so arrogant as to think that the world spends much time talking, discussing or even thinking about them. “Sex” and “Tourism” are synonyms. There is no turist destination without prostitutes, alcohol, good food, some shopping and gambling nearby. Talk to any student of turism the world-over, and you will find out that (at least the bright and successful ones) know this fact. Ukraine does not have much gambling, mountains worth traveling to see, sightseeing, beaches on clean water, shopping and the good restaurants are too expensive. Therefore the very few turist that go, can only find alcohol (the good one being too expensive) and sex. Without a turism infrastructure, good roads, good domestic fligths and airports, friendly English speaking police to guide you and assist you, street names we can read, good hotels at reasonable rates… the only thing left that is good and relatively cheap…. is sex. Talking about sex in Ukraine, well… what else is there to do? Visiting churches is not what most turist want to do all day… or night. And, what is so wrong about sex? Hopefully you were born as a result of it, and you practice it sometimes… People ‘do it’ all the time, everywhere, and at least the tourists don’t force anyone into it, is a voluntary agreement between two (or 3 if you are lucky) consenting adults. People sell products/services to make a living, and just about the only thing many good Ukrainians have to sell is their beauty as no jobs are widely available or they pay (When they pay) wages that are not enough to survive on. Many employees, to keep their jobs or get paid, need to ‘give’ some sex, uncompensated. Sex follows men, turists or not, in Ukraine or elsewhere, wherever they go. This is not the exclusive characteristic of Ukraine. Sex: It will happen, for fun, for money, for loneliness, for mercy, for love, for the hope of love, for an orgasm. Let it be, relax…. and enjoy it! Don’t beat yourself up over that and don’t think this is the ‘mark’ of Ukraine, is everywyere!

Sex for money within adults is ok in my opinion, as long as both sides know and accept the deal on their free will. Their reasons to enter into the transaction, is up to them and I would resist the temptation to condemn it out of personal religious (or otherwise) beliefs. Impossing on others your beliefs, is tyranny. Live and and live, give others the freedom you claim for yourself.
