Ukraine is honoring on January 29 a feat of Ukrainian young people who died while defending their country. The courage and sacrifice of hundreds of military cadets and students have become a real example for the next generations of fighters for independence. Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych announced this in his address to the Ukrainian people on the occasion of Kruty Heroes Remembrance Day.
Yanukovych noted that the events of 1918 were an important lesson for modern Ukrainians. “This is not only a lesson of courage, but also a lesson of how attentive we should be in our decisions and how carefully we should think when it comes to the lives of young people,” he said, UKRINFORM reported, with reference to the official website of the president.
“Remember today the victory and courage of all those who have for many centuries given their lives for the independence of Ukraine and for our future,” reads the address.
Kruty was a village and a railway station between Bakhmach and Nizhyn in Ukraine, which saw on January 29, 1918 a historic battle between a small group of young Ukrainian patriots and Bolshevik troops who wanted to conquer Ukraine and prevent it from seceding from the Russian Empire.
