Check out seafood dining options in the capital

Seafood lovers have in the past had to suffer in the nation’s capital. Despite the fact that Ukraine borders two seas and can boast hundreds upon hundreds of kilometers of rivers, the people of the Steppe remain true to their traditional fare of meat and potatoes augmented with beets and mayonnaise.

SSSR eatery welcomes you

Kyiv is a city that rarely misses an opportunity to remind us just how eclectic it really is. The Pechersk district, whose visual landscape boasts an abundant array of new high-end real estate and also some of the city’s most recognizable Soviet and Orthodox
cultural and historical monuments, Continue reading ‘SSSR eatery welcomes you’

Restaurant «Swing»

Life is full of improvisation… We take it as a motto off “Swing” restaurant with its enticing live, real music to swing yourself up to the end without any hint of boredom. No “mass” culture, no “phonograph” music is heard here. Only artistic and talented trumpeters, drummers, pianists, and saxophone players.

Culinary adventures at Exotica

You have to approach a restaurant named “Exotica” with slightly raised eyebrows. Making my way to Pier 6, off Naberezhno-Khreshchatytska, images flashed through my mind of sushi served on the recumbent bodies of naked women or a smoky Kyiv cabaret. Continue reading ‘Culinary adventures at Exotica’

Celebrating the city’s middle class restaurants

I remember my first days in Kyiv well, as forgettable as they were. It was five years ago and the city had no middle-class restaurants worth noting. Kyivans had the choice of dining out in Soviet-style cafes, McDonald’s restaurants or really expensive places where you daren’t walk in without a thick wad of C-notes to cover the high cost of dining. I love eating out and yet I hardly ate out at all.

Great kosher in Podil for Passover; solid Indian restaurant hidden away

I’d like to know how the real estate agents sold the location of Taj, a lovely little Indian restaurant sequestered on one of the quietest streets downtown, to its owners. Did they say that being incredibly hard to find was the latest trend in dining or that patrons would only work up an even greater appetite if they Continue reading ‘Great kosher in Podil for Passover; solid Indian restaurant hidden away’

The Ukrainian Connoisseur Club (TUCC) takes a closer look at restaurant Taboo; oysters invade Kyiv

The Kyiv Post has once again joined with The Ukrainian Connoisseur Club (TUCC) in an attempt to objectively quantify new and existing restaurants according to an established standard for fine dining in Ukraine. Approximately once a month the not-for-profit TUCC selects a Kyiv restaurant, and, on April 6, Continue reading ‘The Ukrainian Connoisseur Club (TUCC) takes a closer look at restaurant Taboo; oysters invade Kyiv’

No Bangkok, Kyiv still ekes out a worthy Thai restaurant

A former resident of Kyiv, an American named Bruce, once told some Best Of team members that looking for Thai food in this city, though difficult at times, can even be rewarding. He mentioned in particular a certain local restaurant that, he said, served the best Tom Kha soup this side of Bangkok. Heady words, to be sure, but having lived there for some years over a decade ago, he became a discerning culinary expert on all Continue reading ‘No Bangkok, Kyiv still ekes out a worthy Thai restaurant’

Chinese restaurant Victory finally reopened; coffee-themed Mokko offers decent food

All of us on the Post editorial team used to love this place (everyone knew what was meant by “at Chinese.”) First of all, it was conveniently situated downstairs next to our office; secondly, it served decent ethnic food for very modest prices – a combination rarely found within the Kyiv restaurant scene. Continue reading ‘Chinese restaurant Victory finally reopened; coffee-themed Mokko offers decent food’
