FRIDAY 14 – WEDNESDAY 19
Movie in English: “Tideland”
Having dealt with the completely commercial project “Brothers Grimm” just to earn some extra money, unorthodox director Terry Gilliam makes a fabulous return to his trademark cinema with the movie “Tideland.” The story of a little girl living in a strange place in her own made-up world, communicating only with Barbie doll heads – this nightmarish tale could only come to us from Gilliam, who adapted the movie from a novel by Mitch Cullin. The fact that “Tideland” is showing in English with Russian subtitles leaves no excuse for not seeing it.

Kyiv (19 Chervonoarmiyska, 234-7381). See movie listings for more information.

FRIDAY 14

“Shtolnya”

The much talked about and publicized – as the “first Ukrainian horror movie” (and this much is probably true) – “Shtolnya” will finally hit Ukrainian cinemas this week. It’s hard to predict whether the movie will turn out any more sophisticated than your average American horror flick involving a gang of youngsters in deep trouble. However, we hope that it will at least do better than the recently released Ukrainian movies “Prorvemos” and “Orange Sky” which have done little to reinstate local viewers’ faith in Ukrainian cinema. In the meantime, the video for the pop song “Shtolnya,” already on the airwaves performed by three blondes from the group XXL and a bunch of glamorous hip-hoppers, provides an example of an exceptionally inappropriate soundtrack for a horror flick.

Various cinemas. See movie listings on p. 30 for more information.

FRIDAY 14 –– SATURDAY 15

Toute la Nuit du Court-Metrage (The Long Night of Short Films)

Traditionally the French Spring festival involves a marathon of short films –showing more than 30 in one night. All the films presented in “The Long Night of Short Films” are of different genres, shot by different directors, and play for different lengths of time. The shortest one is only 3 min 18 sec. In these selections, French film directors represent vital life problems, personal visions of the world and everyday details.

Ukraina (5 Horodetskoho, 279-6750, 279-6301). 11 p.m. See movie listings on p. 30 for more information.

SPECIAL EVENT

SUNDAY 16

Fashion Show

Promising young designer Alina Golubeva will present her first collection featuring clothing made of silk, velvet, wool and jersey and embroidered with beads.

Center for Fashion Development (37-41 Artema). 6 p.m. Entrance by invitation. For invitations, please call 536-5074.

MONDAY 17

“Avec Aragon” by Jean Ristat

Louis Aragon was an outstanding personality of his time. The talented writer left a number of verses, poems, stories and novels. He followed various literature trends in his work and took the Soviet Union as a symbol of the new world. All this attracted the attention of his fellow countryman Jean Ristat who will present his book “Avec Aragon” to a Kyiv audience in conjunction with the French Spring in Ukraine.

Baboon (39 Khmelnytskoho, 234-1503). 7 p.m.

THEATER

FRIDAY 21 –– SATURDAY 22

Shlem.com

The Russian pioneer of cyber-theater is coming to Kyiv. SHLEM.COM, a stage project in the form of so-called ActiveFictionShow, is an adaptation of the novel “Horror Helmet” by popular Russian writer Victor Pelevin. The performance will be simultaneously shown onstage, on screens in the hall and on the monitors of PCs and laptops (if you bring one with you). The presence of all the technical appliances becomes clear once you consider the plot of “Horror Helmet” which follows the plight of several people caught in a virtual trap while chatting online. In short, expect something truly remarkable – the ticket prices certainly are.

Metropolitan Hall (8 Prorizna). 8 p.m. Tickets Hr 400 to Hr 800.

LIVE MUSIC

TUESDAY 18

Jazz Concert: Jean-Francois Baez Trio

In 2003, the famous French musician, accordionist Jean-Francois Baez, formed a trio with saxophonist Jean-Charles Richard and double-bassist Etienne Romaine. Since then they have been playing their combination of jazz and French folk in different parts of the world. The three are musicians and story-tellers at the same time – for them, every sound is a word and every melody a story about some picturesque place. Baez himself also composes music for many theater performances and art shows. This should be a real treat for jazz lovers.

Tchaikovsky National Music Academy (1-3/11 Horodetskoho, 279-0792). 7:30 p.m. Please call for ticket information.

FRIDAY 21

The Third Annual Kyiv International Music Festival 2006

This is the third time Ukraine and the UK are seriously cooperating in the classical music field. The goal of the Kyiv Festival, organized by the BUU International Music Agency, is not only to promote British music in Ukraine, but also support Ukrainian classical music. The audience will be able to hear works by different composers performed by a number of distinguished international artists. However the main attention will be given to works by Mozart and those inspired by him as a tribute 250-th anniversary of the genius composer celebrated this year.

National Philharmonic (2 Volodymyrsky Uzviv) and Tchaikovsky National Music Academy (1-3/11 Horodetskoho). 7 p.m. Through Thursday 27. For more information call 202-1204.

GALLERY

FRIDAY 14

“Civilization Battle” by Vadym Bondarenko

Odessa artist Vadym Bondarenko will present his contemporary art project “Civilization Battle” at L-Art gallery. His works reflect human anxiety over increasing conflicts between religions, nationalities and between individuals. However, Bondarenko gives us hope that we might be able to postpone the degeneration of society if we try…

L-Art (2B Andriyivsky Uzviz, 425-0320). Through May 13.

CLUBS

SATURDAY 15

Victor Calderone

This name is no empty phrase for millions of clubbers. Even those who take little interest in club music know his remixes of Madonna, Sting and other superstars. Victor Calderone, who sets everything and everyone around him ablaze, is coming to Kyiv to warm up its dwellers after the cold winter days. Adviser to Dolce & Gabbana Design House and one of the best New York party-makers – Calderone is sure to provide Kyivans with an unforgettable night.

Kyiv Expo Plaza (2B Salyutna). 11 p.m.

Bob Sinclar

Another superstar deejay visiting Kyiv this Saturday is Christopher LeFriant, known to the music fans all over the world as Bob Sinclar. His hit “Kiss My Eyes” and accompanying video featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme first introduced Bob Sinclair to a wide Ukrainian audience over a year ago. Since then, the club master has done a lot of work, including releasing the new single “Western Dream” last week. The successful musician, sun-glasses model and the owner of the label “Yellow Productions” will entertain Kyiv clubbers with his best beats, and the clubbers should pay him back by outdoing Van Damme in that strange video.

Arena (2A Baseyna, 492-0000). 10 p.m. Tickets Hr. 200.

SPORTS

Friday 14 – Saturday 15

Premiere League soccer

The English championship continues with second-placed Manchester United trying to increase their position against Sunderland at 9:40 p.m. local time, while Saturday sees action all over the UK, with Bolton taking on the ever-formidable Chelsea at 2:40 p.m., and Arsenal dueling with West Bromfield at 4:55 p.m.

O’Brien’s Irish Pub (17A Mykhaylivksa, M. Nezalezhnosti metro, 279-1584) Golden Gate (15 Zolotovoritska, Zoloti Vorota metro, 253-5188), other sports bars.
