FILMS
FRIDAY 14 – WEDNESDAY 19
Movie in English: “Tidelandâ€
Having dealt with the completely commercial project “Brothers Grimm†just to earn some extra money, unorthodox director Terry Gilliam makes a fabulous return to his trademark cinema with the movie “Tideland.†The story of a little girl living in a strange place in her own made-up world, communicating only with Barbie doll heads – this nightmarish tale could only come to us from Gilliam, who adapted the movie from a novel by Mitch Cullin. The fact that “Tideland†is showing in English with Russian subtitles leaves no excuse for not seeing it.
Kyiv (19 Chervonoarmiyska, 234-7381). See movie listings for more information.
FRIDAY 14
“Shtolnyaâ€
The much talked about and publicized – as the “first Ukrainian horror movie†(and this much is probably true) – “Shtolnya†will finally hit Ukrainian cinemas this week. It’s hard to predict whether the movie will turn out any more sophisticated than your average American horror flick involving a gang of youngsters in deep trouble. However, we hope that it will at least do better than the recently released Ukrainian movies “Prorvemos†and “Orange Sky†which have done little to reinstate local viewers’ faith in Ukrainian cinema. In the meantime, the video for the pop song “Shtolnya,†already on the airwaves performed by three blondes from the group XXL and a bunch of glamorous hip-hoppers, provides an example of an exceptionally inappropriate soundtrack for a horror flick.
Various cinemas. See movie listings on p. 30 for more information.
FRIDAY 14 –– SATURDAY 15

In these selections, French film directors represent vital life problems, personal visions of the world and everyday details.
