National Historical and Cultural Reserve “Sophia Kievskaya”

Sophia Kievskaya is one of the greatest monuments of Slavic and world culture, history, architecture and art. It is also in the list of World Heritage of UNESCO. The cathedral is situated on the highest point of ancient Kiev. Its wall paintings and mosaics are kind of Bible for those who cannot read. The cathedral was the center of social, political and cultural life of Rus, famous Yaroslav Mydriy’s library was situated here. It was never totally destroyed though for 400 years it was in ruins. The cathedral that we see nowadays was rebuilt in XVIII century. The interior includes the biggest number of medieval wall-paintings and mosaics in the world. Also there are graves of some Knyazh and metropolitans of Kievian Rus on the territory of the cathedral as well as the biggest bell in Ukraine.
