It’s wonderful to acknowledge charitable giving in Ukraine, whenever and however it is done. Even better is acknowledging that the Kyiv Lions Club, now three years old, will again host the now 10th-annual Robbie Burns Night party, all the proceeds for which will go to their eponymous charity fund, to be distributed to local charities.
The Kyiv Lions Club is a big contributor to charitable giving here. In just three short years, the club has raised its profile, and the amount it has collected for local charities has grown to more than $70,000 in that time. Everything they do, it seems, just gets bigger and better.
Burns Night, then, of which the local Lions have been part for the last three years, likewise continues to get bigger and better. Certainly the enthusiasm for it has grown, and so have the sponsors and patrons of the organization. It’s become a feel-good organization like the International Women’s Club of Kyiv, which has a lot of fun doing good and helping less-fortunate Ukrainians along the way.
Kyiv Lion’s Club Past President Stuart McKenzie and his successor, Pierre Sleiman, promise that this year’s Burns Night will be the biggest and best ever. They’re bringing in Scotland’s premier piper, Roderick Deans, to play the bagpipes; they’ve arranged for a Scottish pipe band to provide festive music; The Clan will perform their hilarious antics once again; a five-star dinner (including traditional haggis!) will be served; and local pop and radio stars will round out the entertainment program. Oh, and one more thing, to make it a night true to the memory of Robbie Burns: the drinks are free all night.
Come out to toast the bard, rub shoulders with some of Kyiv’s most celebrated and fun-loving souls, and help give something back to the city we all call home.
