The Girls are losing their Shirts!

Several girls in Kiev have take to bathing and protesting in central Kiev in Independent square. They are protesting to the fact that the hot water has been shut off in their hostels.

This is not something that is just being done to them and it is something that the people of the former Soviet Union have come to expect. The hot water is not regulated by the household or even by the building but rather by city blocks. Over the course of the summer months the government will turn off the hot water in certain parts of town in order to perform upkeep and repairs on the pipes.

So for those who have lived in the Ukraine have become accustom to waking up one morning in the summer to find that the only thing coming out of the water taps is straight cold water. So what do the people do when they have no hot water for weeks at a time? Many have found several different ways to deal with this. Some will visit friends or family that live in other parts of the city, some will take to boiling their water which can become very time consuming others will find locations such as the sauna or the gym and as many can see others will also take to protesting and bathing in liberty square.

Will The Gas Prices in Ukraine Increase in 2009?

The head of Gazprom warned that the prices of gas in the Ukraine that is imported from Russia might more than double in the upcoming year.

The prices on Ukraine could be raised to over $400 per each 1,000 cubic meters in the year of 2009. That would be an increase of over $220 from this year. If this happens, which is what is expected then that means that Russia will be paying more for the same gas that it is buying from Central Asia. This increase in the price of gas could cause an issue.

Gazprom is one of the prime companies that delivers to over a quarter of the gas suppliers in Europe and mostly throughout the Ukraine. There have been disruptions previously when there have been disputes over the pricing of the supplies sent to Europe.

Gazprom has said that the deals with the Central Asian suppliers are still not settled and they will be reviewed. Both parties have yet to come to any agreements on a new contract.

So what does this mean for the Ukraine and its gas prices? As of right now it means that is likely to be an increase in the upcoming year but what the amount of the increase will be is still not known. We will have to wait and see what those in charge decide once they have all reached an agreement.

No More Bread Production?

Bread  Is it possible that the Khlib Kyeva Company will really stop their bread production? According to both of the company directors of the Khilb Kyeva Company there is a real threat that the termination of the bread supplies will happen.

Because of the bread prices in Kyiv being regulated, the production of the bread has become unprofitable and even cause high losses of over UAH 100million between the months of January and June for the Kyivmlyn and Kyivkhilb Enterprises.

The lack of compensation of UAH 75 million for the months of January to June from the Kyvi City State Administration has caused a great deal of distress for Mazuryka.

In 2007 and 2008, Kyivkhlib addressed the city state administration several times to request and increase on the current bread prices to help the company continue to profit and be able to continue their manufacturing of the bread.

He said that “Ukrainskyi” bread price need to be increased to UAH 3.16 instead of the current price of UAH 1.64; “Bilyi” bread needs to increase to UAH 2.68 instead of the current price of UAH 1.68; and “Nyva” long loaf needs to increase to UAH 2.3 instead of the current price of UAH 1.4.

Kyivkhlib which is the Ukraine’s largest producer and manufacture of bread and many bakery products, ended the year of 2007 with a large loss of UAH 16.626 million. So is it possible that the bread manufacturing will cease? Only time will tell.
