7 Wonders of Ukraine

Ukraine does have Wonders, world-famous and unexplored. A nation-wide poll initiated and held in 2007 with support of Mykola Tomenko, Ukrainian politician and the deputy of Verkhovna Rada. Though I voted for somewhat different treasures, here are the results of the national poll closed in August 2007:

1. Kamianets-Podilskyi

A town of true medieval spirits. Here you will find one of the biggest Ukrainian fortresses in the world history of defense architecture. According to the chronicles the fortress was erected in the late 16th century by the Lithuanian prince Koriatovych. You’ll find yourself on a high rocky bank with a picturesque landscape and enormous towers with mysterious latin inscriptions.

2. Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra

The most densely churched spot in Ukraine, an orthodox monastery founded in 1051 by the two monks Antoniy and Feodosiy in the caves near the prince’s Berestovo residence in the suburbs of Kyiv and is now located in the heart of Ukrainian capital.

3. National Park “Khotyn Fortress”

A fortress attracting tourists from all over the world is based in Khotyn, one of the oldest cities of Ukraine which has just achieved its first thousand. Placed on the crossing of most important transporting routes it has always attracted enemies like it attracts tourists nowadays. The fortress was erected in order to protect the homeland from the invaders, good for homeland!
