5 Attributes of a National Ukrainian Home

A national Ukrainian home I will be speaking about is a hut you’ll only find in Ukrainian lifestyle museums. It’s there that you are most luckily to find the whole set of items. Some of the attributes though can be found even in modern Ukrainian homes.

1. Obraz

Icon is probably the most widespread attribute. In some families Obrazy are old in half-delapidated wooden frames inherited from generation to generation. Some people have their Obrazy painted specially for them, while others only have faded paper icons in metal frames under glass. In Western Ukrainian families amber icons are popular.

2. Rushnyk

A traditional embroidered towel the style and the color of which will vary depending on the region. Ideally Rushnyk is the dowry of any decent Ukrainian girl which she is supposed to have made all by herself. Rushnyk is placed around the Obraz which together make an integral composition. Most modern homes do not have Rushnyk.

3. Oberig

Oberig is an item to protect the house from the evil spirits. It can be either Didukh (the symbol of the good crop) or a styled Vinyk (straw broom). This traditional item is very uncommon for modern homes.
