3 Modern Ukrainian Artists

Modern art exists in Ukraine. During my University years we spent days on happenings and installations brought from abroad. Now, happily, there are Maecenases among Ukrainian oligarchs and artists have gone far from stereotypes that they should be poor fathers of ten kids with wives taking 5 jobs so that they could create. Now they prefer selling art for really good money. Here they are:

1. Illya Chichkan

Representative of “Ukrainian New Wave”, author of crazy performances and masterpieces of photography, a number of videos. You’ll meet freaked out animals, people in uniforms, painted foetuses and dead bodies on his works. Some of them really spooky! I would think twice before introducing my kid to this art…

2. Serhiy Bratkov

An artist from Kharkiv, working mainly in photography, creating a sort of realism: tired airhostess in black tights, a boy under “kley moment” (a toxic glue used as a drug), a very beaten boxer, a girl-soldier with a long plait, a sailor with malformed face, a girl in a red dress chained to the heater, etc. Though if you ask me if I have an idea what he wanted to say – well, probably it was his way to tell the truth.

3. Vlada Ralko

Finally a girl, finally someone knowing how to ply the brush! Though all is so rosy-rosy-rosy, violet and red at times. “Chinese erotic diary” – see it, you’ll also feel quite arty!

Guys, you know, I should list myself! I also have nice photos of mine, and the pictures painted for my kid look at least like something… In the beginning of the post I said art exists in Ukraine. Forget it. If they aren’t ashamed to get money for that what do people do for free?
